Cosmetologist Interview: First Job Out of Beauty School
Meet Alex, a cosmetologist at a salon and spa. Alex started her cosmetology education through a program offered by her high school, but she felt the program wasn't sufficient. She wanted to attend a more progressive beauty school to ensure her success in the industry. When Alex walked into the Paul Mitchell Academy, she felt she was home. "I knew I had to be a part of it," she says. More from Alex about her first job in cosmetology:
Did your beauty school offer any job placement services?
The Paul Mitchell Academy recommended me for my current job. I knew there were good profit opportunities at a top salon like the one I work for, and I was already familiar with the product line they carried.
What else did your beauty school do to help launch your career?
I received help with my resume, and the school provided several resources on business-building in my student kit. The kit also included tools to do my own photoshoots so that I could start to build a portfolio of work.
How long after beauty school did you get your first job as a cosmetologist?
I started working a couple of weeks after graduating from beauty school.
What was the best piece of information you learned in beauty school that helped with the school-to-work transition?
The school invited a lot of great guest speakers from the industry, and I felt like they were speaking directly to me. They said it was possible to accomplish my dreams, and I learned how to set myself up for success with goals. They also told me to think about what makes me stand out in a sea of people.
From First Cosmetology Job to Future Career
Other student services offered by her beauty school included advising, housing assistance, and specialized training opportunities. Alex believes that the experience gained by working hands-on in a real salon has taken her skills to new levels, but she drew heavily from her cosmetology education when she was just starting out in her first job as a cosmetologist. She also feels that her beauty school education offers her stability and career options. "I could always go back to the Paul Mitchell Academy and become an educator. There's a lot of support."
