Practice Salon Sanitization at Cosmetology School and Beyond

Cosmetology school can prepare you for an exciting career in hair design or esthetics, and having the proper salon sanitization knowledge is essential before you begin work in the world of hair and beauty.

Each state has its own sanitation laws but there are general practices that every good salon should follow. When you are looking to work as a hair beautician or esthetician, carefully observe the sanitization procedures of each salon or spa, and be sure to avoid those with poor cleaning habits.

Salon Sanitization: What Every Cosmetology School Student Should Know

Clients appreciate when a beautician is meticulously clean and presents a sanitary environment. Developing excellent sanitation skills in cosmetology school helps you bring your best self to the workforce and grow a stellar reputation.

Following are some important sanitization practices taught in hair and beauty school and to be observed in any salon:

  1. Always sterilize combs, brushes and picks in Barbicide after each use.
  2. Sweep up fallen hair after every client.
  3. Clean shampoo bowls after every client.
  4. Always use a neck strip when placing a cape on a client.
  5. Do not share scissors, tweezers, or any other tools with other stylists or beauticians.
  6. Prevent fungal and bacterial infections by using a sanitizing spray on your workstation after every client.
  7. Use gloves for every chemical service. If you have a cut on your hands, use gloves for every service until it heals.
  8. Wash capes and gowns after every client.
  9. Completely immerse all non-electrical items being sanitized.
  10. Store soiled towels and linens in closed containers, with clear labels on each container.
  11. Clean pedicure bowls thoroughly by emptying and disinfecting the screen drain after each service.
  12. Store chemical supplies in a separate room or closed cabinet not accessible to the public.
  13. Use proper ventilation to ensure that clients and staff are not breathing in fumes from chemical services.

Salon sanitization is a serious matter. Cosmetology students should practice proper procedures in the classroom and in the salon. Many cosmetology schools offer specialized safety and sanitization courses that deal with specific issues, such as HIV prevention, electric file procedures, and hazardous materials. These courses can further develop your beauty school education and enhance your future in the beauty industry.
