Cosmetologist Interview: What I Learned in Beauty School

Faren decided that a career in the beauty industry was her calling, and she enrolled in beauty school. "It was absolutely the best decision I've made," she says. "The school was a great fit, and I felt that it was the best place for me to be." Read more from Faren:

What was the most useful thing you learned in school?

Winn Claybaugh [dean of Paul Mitchell The School] was a guest speaker. He motivated me when he said that a hair career isn't about hair; it's about making someone's day.

How would you describe your beauty school experience?

I loved it. It was fun, and the school really set me up for success. I learned more than just the basics. I wouldn't do things any differently.

What was taught on your first day of beauty school?

We received our student kits and the instructors went over what we would learn in beauty school. It was an intense day because I didn't know what to expect.

What was a challenge that took you more than one try to master?

Color and perms were hard for me because of the chemistry involved.

How are you at performing that service now?

I'm very comfortable with colors and perms now. We worked on mannequins for some time before we started working on clients.

Beauty School: Cutting-Edge Cosmetology Education

Faren's school tailors their lessons to students' learning styles by basing classes and teaching methods on multiple intelligence, the learning research proposed by Howard Gardner at Harvard University. Once a beauty student's learning strengths are identified, instructors customize the curriculum and offer targeted instruction for the student's unique way of learning. Multiple intelligence research has shown that when students learn in an environment that complements their learning strengths, they are more likely to succeed in school and in their careers.

Faren suggests that people interested in a hair career enroll in a school that is a good fit for them. "Pick a school based on what sort of income you want. Sometimes it benefits you to spend more if you'll get more out of it."
