Enhance Your Permanent Makeup Artistry with a Cosmetology School Education
If you love to work with cosmetics and help people look and feel gorgeous, then consider a career as a permanent makeup artist. You can train at a licensed cosmetology school to learn the beauty profession inside and out, and then to earn your qualifications in permanent cosmetics to be on your way to a cutting-edge beauty career.
What Type of Training is Required for a Permanent Makeup Artist?
Licensing requirements for permanent makeup artists vary from state to state. In some instances, a permanent makeup artist may be required to obtain a beauty school education in makeup artistry as well as a permanent makeup artist qualification. A student interested in makeup artistry can earn a diploma or certificate at a recognized cosmetology school or beauty college that specializes in makeup artistry. Beauty school programs that focus on permanent makeup artistry are typically taught by artists who have been in the industry for many years. These specialty programs run anywhere from two days to six weeks, and should be followed by apprenticeship work for another six months to a year.
What Does a Permanent Makeup Artist Do?
Permanent makeup artists work with clients to apply micro pigmentation to the layers of their skin, which results in natural looking makeup that does not wash off. The makeup can last from two to ten years, depending on the client's preferences and the technique used. The process is similar to cosmetic tattooing in that the makeup can only be removed with laser treatment, much like a tattoo. The most popular treatments done on clients are permanent brows, permanent lips, and corrective procedures to cover scars and pigmentation.
Depending on the specifications of their beauty education, permanent makeup artists can work from a salon, a doctor's office, or from their own studio. Most permanent makeup artists must have some form of licensure and specialized permanent makeup training to work in any of these locations.
