Hairstylist Ken Paves Caters Cuts to Each Client
By Caitlin Chandler
Acclaimed hairstylist Ken Paves doesn't consider himself a trendsetter. Despite creating Jessica Simpson's tousled gold waves and Jennifer Lopez's sleek ponytail, Paves has always sought to enhance each client's inner sense of beauty.
"I don't like to follow trends, because I think trends come and go. I like to make sure that the woman, most importantly, feels really beautiful, really sexy, and really radiant," Paves said in an interview on CNN before heading off to style the locks of women about to stroll down the Golden Globe red carpet in 2002.
Paves hails from a suburb outside of Detroit, Michigan. Potential hairstylists may be interested to know that Paves attended cosmetology school, which provided a solid foundation for his aesthetic ambitions. After Paves graduated in 1994, he was soon immersed in styling women's tresses. Word of Paves' talent spread and he found himself moving from Michigan to Miami, followed by a move to New York and most recently to Los Angeles.
As Paves began attracting celebrity clientele, he also picked up work with major films, like The Wedding Planner and Monster-in-Law. In 2004, Paves debuted his own line of hair care products--Flawless by Paves Professional--and later launched a line of hair extensions. Paves now appears regularly as a guest hairstylist on TV shows.
Despite Hollywood success, however, Paves never forgot his roots. In 2002, he opened a salon in his Michigan hometown of Clinton Township with a childhood friend (another Paves Salon in LA serves celebs). Paves' parents help him manage the salon while he's busy traveling.
"I am so excited that they (the Paves stylists) are putting the same kind of thought into the woman who comes in to get her hair done to go out to dinner with her husband as I am to send Eva Longoria down the red carpet at the Emmys," Paves said in an interview with the Detroit Free Press in 2005.
Paves' belief in giving back is evident in his work with Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization that sends doctors around the world to operate on children with facial deformities. Paves has served as an unofficial goodwill ambassador for Smile, bringing in clients like Jessica Simpson to support the philanthropic organization.
