After the Exam: Finding a Job in Cosmetology
By Lynsey HemstreetWith a short course of study and immediate eligibility for work upon earning a license, cosmetology careers are growing in popularity. As a cosmetologist, esthetician, makeup artist, or hairstylist, your employment options are nearly as wide as the U.S. itself.
Careers in Cosmetology
As a licensed cosmetologist, you can find jobs in the personal services, hair or spa industries. A variety of people attend beauty school, from mothers to immigrants to wide-eyed youngsters. Some are drawn by the glamorous opportunity to style hair or do makeup for television, magazines, music videos, and Hollywood stars. Others enjoy having a personal connection with their clients and the freedom to make their own schedules as hair stylists, waxers, estheticians, and manicurists.
Preparation for a Career in Cosmetology
Every state has slightly different requirements to become a cosmetologist. California, one of the strictest states, requires that students complete 1,600 hours of education and practice before they are eligible to take the licensing exam. Although hour requirements vary for cosmetology licensure, many states offer beauty school programs on nails and waxing, and offer a license in those specific fields with fewer hours required.
Once students have learned the basics of their craft, the next step is translating the methods they learn in school to the skills they need in the salon. Many cosmetologists operate their own businesses, and assume responsibility for taxes, health insurance, liability insurance, and their own supplies and materials. Some first-time stylists are not prepared for these types of business hurdles and can fall into the trap of under-declaring their incomes, spending cash as quickly as they make it, and bad money management.
Finding a Job in Cosmetology
Once you have passed the exam in your state and obtained your license, the demand for qualified cosmetologists is high and your job search should not be particularly long or complicated. Some salons offer training programs for cosmetologists and estheticians fresh out of beauty school. These apprenticeship programs can last one to two years, during which stylists take classes in blow-drying, color chemistry and placement, cutting, waxing or massage methods, and business practices. Apprenticeship programs are typically 40 hours per week and pay a low wage (although tips are often accepted for blow-dries or shampooing). Once a stylist goes on the floor, she can typically work on commission or rent a chair, which often offers more freedom.
