Online CE for Veterinarians

Colorado State University
CSU's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences offers online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The program consists of a series of courses on a variety of contemporary veterinary topics. Accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Lifelearn
Lifelearn offers veterinary reference and continuing education programs in a variety of electronic interactive multimedia formats including CD-ROM and Internet applications. Continuing education products include:

    The ReferenCE Series is a line of accredited multimedia continuing education programs on CD-ROM. These highly interactive, case-based programs are authored by leading international veterinary authors, and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home or office.
  • Disease Database - Companion™
    Companion to Canine & Feline Practice is a database that provides instant access to clinical information gathered from journals, textbooks and conference proceedings over the past 20 years.
  • Clinical Cases - Case Discovery™
    Case DISCovery is a compilation of 6 CD-ROMs representing six full-length canine and feline cases. These short (30-60 minute) cases are a fun and enjoyable way to do CE, and become a timeless reference for your practice.
Continuing education is accredited by the Ontario Veterinary College (Guelph, Ontario, Canada).

Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine
Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine offers a core of classes online, which can be taken for continuing education or non-degree University credit. In terms of content, online courses are the same as courses taught on campus. Curriculum approval for an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology is pending.

University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine
University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine GO-LIVE program offers realtime programs, both as web-based "realtime" online discussions as well as audio programs. Online CE courses include:

  • Update on Small Animal Endocrinology:
  • Selected Medical Disorders of the Canine and Feline Liver and Pancreas
  • Rationality & Resistance in Antimicrobial Usage Topics
Georgia State Veterinary Board allows 15 hours of interactive on-line learning for relicensure.

University of Illinois Veterinary Education Online
The Office of Continuing Education at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois offers modules to enhance knowledge and to increase clinical skills. Current courses offered include:

  • Pain Terminology, Physiology, Recognition, Strategies
  • for Management and Placebo Effect
  • Analgesic Drugs
  • Analgesic Techniques
  • Pain Management for Specific Conditions and Procedures
  • Managing Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats
The modules represent the equivalent of continuing education credit as indicated. However, you should check with your state's regulatory board to ensure acceptance of online continuing education credit.

Veterinary Information Network
Veterinary Information Network (VIN) offers to its members, and to non-member veterinarians, online CE courses taught by specialists. Course titles include:

  • Practical Veterinary Dentistry
  • Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
  • Fluids and Electrolytes - Saving Lives by Knowing More
  • Pharmaceutical Regulatory Review Course
  • Giardia: a GI Parasite with Many Faces
  • Basic Reptile Medicine
VIN online CE courses have 3 main components. Real-time sessions are held, usually for two hours once weekly. Course participants log in for a live interactive session with the instructor(s). These sessions are logged for future study and to ensure participants unable to attend at the actual time of the session will have access to all materials from their course. In addition to the real-time sessions, each course has a library of course materials, including such resources as handouts, slide shows, and movies. Each course also has an interactive message board for an ongoing dialogue between participants and instructors on the course material. VIN courses are approved for continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize American Association of Veterinary State Boards' (AAVSB) Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) and in selected other states.
