| ARTICLE: Technical Support In-Depth |
If you opt for a career in technical support, you'll become one of the half million-plus computer support specialists who troubleshoot consumer problems through call centers and help desks.
The Technical Support Field
If you work in customer support, you'll provide hotline advice to consumers with technical or software problems. If you have additional technician or engineering skills, you could work an online bulletin board.
Becoming a Technical Support Specialist
To work in technical support, you'll need some hands-on education in computing. If you go the non-degree route to a call center job, you can get a technical support job with some certifications and relevant experience. However, if you hope to move up to a position in call center management, you're wise to get a bachelor's degree in an IT field and keep current with technology.
Job Prospects in Technical Support
Technical support jobs constitute one of the fastest-growing positions in the technology field. If you've got the skills, you're almost guaranteed a position--and the money should be good. Median earnings for computer support positions run from $30-$50,000, with the highest salaries paid by professional equipment wholesalers. Vendor call centers, too, pay highly competitive salaries. Senior technical support salaries push $70,000.
