Database Languages-Your First Step Toward a DB Career Oracle develops and markets software for high-end markets that run database systems that support SQL, the structured query language that is the industry standard. If you're going to work with database systems, you'll also need to be familiar with flexible procedural programming language, the children of "Fortran" like PL/I.
Learning to Work With Databases You can get your database credentials by a combination of academic computer science training, Oracle certification, and hands-on experience designing and maintaining databases. If you have your eye on the most technical jobs in database administration, you'll need a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, or management information systems. A master's degree in your field or in business administration (MBA) is even better.
Job Prospects for Database Experts Job prospects look good for all database positions. If you know your stuff, expect to be employed, since database jobs should increase faster than other technology jobs over the next decade. If you become an experienced database administrator you're looking at a median salary of about $55,000, with the probability that you'll earn between $40-$75,000 annually.
