ARTICLE: Spokane In-Depth
Spokane, Washington, the second largest city in the state, has a population of 192,777. It is the county seat of Spokane County, with a median household income of $34,752, according to 2005 U.S. Census data. Known as the "Lilac City," Spokane serves as a shopping, entertainment, and medical hub for the Inland Northwest, and features the 100-acre Riverfront Park in the center of the city. The median value of homes in Spokane is $127,500-- much lower than the national average.

Over 65% of residents over 16 are in the labor force--in line with the national average. Spokane is home to a number of four-year colleges and universities, as well as community colleges, and a number of broadcast and print media outlets serve the community. Recently selected as one of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities in the World by the Intelligent Community Forum, Spokane was the only city in the U.S. to earn this distinction. Its success is due, in part, to:
  • The city's advanced use of broadband technology for healthcare and economic development
  • The city center, which contains one of the densest concentrations of high-speed connectivity in the U.S.

The city's mild weather allows Spokane to advertise itself as an outdoors-lover's paradise, with hiking, camping, white-water rafting, skiing, lakes, and the Centennial Trail nearby. Spokane is home to Bloomsday, the largest timed road race in the nation, and Hoopsfest, the largest three-on-three basketball tournament.
