Seattle-Bellevue, Washington is a thriving metropolitan area comprising the cities of Seattle and Bellevue. It is also known as the Greater Seattle area, or the Puget Sound area. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the population of Seattle is 563,374, and the population of Bellevue, just across Lake Washington from Seattle, is 109,569. The economy in Seattle-Bellevue is thriving, and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the per capita income for the area is $41,634 per year--26% above the nation's average.

The best-known companies in Seattle-Bellevue are Boeing and Microsoft, but there are many other companies that employee large numbers of residents. Top employers in the Greater Seattle Puget Sound area include:
  • The Boeing Company: 64,000 employees
  • Port of Seattle: 11,225 employees
  • Alaska Air Group, Inc.: 11,150 employees
  • Microsoft Corporation: 11,000 employees
  • University of Washington: 10,000 employees

Seattle-Bellevue has much to offer in the realms of arts and culture, entertainment, and shopping. The Bumbershoot Festival features nationally-acclaimed musical acts and visual and performing arts each year in late summer. Seattle has four major professional sports teams: the SuperSonics in basketball, the Seahawks in football, the Mariners in baseball, and the Storm in women's basketball. The Pike Place Market. an open-air public market on the Seattle waterfront, features many small shops including fishmongers, produce sellers, and gift and antique shops.

Though many high-tech companies in Seattle-Bellevue were badly hit when the tech economy took a downturn around 2000, Seattle's economy has recovered. Thanks to a diverse range of successful businesses, Seattle-Bellevue, Washington should continue to thrive in the future.
