Originally a logging community during the late 1800s, Federal Way's location along Federal Highway 99 led to the area's growth and incorporation as a city in 1990. The city bases its development on a comprehensive 20-year plan. Of particular value to businesses there are the large shipping ports in Seattle and Tacoma and the proximity of the Sea-Tac Airport. The largest private employers are:
- Weyerhaeuser Company
- St. Francis Hospital
- World Vision
- Capital One
- Costco Wholesale
Federal Way's natural beauty and mild climate create a wonderful environment for outdoor fun. The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden hosts hundreds of variations of rhododendrons from all over the world, and the Dash Point State Park provides access to the Puget Sound shoreline. The West Hylebos Wetlands and the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection are additional attractions for the nature enthusiast. Thrill seekers of all ages can visit the Six Flags amusement and water park Wild Waves/Enchanted Village. Federal Way also is home to two famous sports facilities--the Weyerhaeuser/King County Aquatic Center and Celebration Park, a venue for softball and soccer.
