ARTICLE: Newport News In-Depth
Newport News, Virginia is located on the Chesapeake Bay, and makes up Virginia's southeastern metropolitan hub, along with Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Geographically, Newport News runs north to south along the James River, and much of the city's industry has traditionally relied on the James. Today, the southern part of the city still bustles with shipyards, ports, and CSX rail yards. However, the northern part of Newport News is more suburban, with malls, country clubs, and a recently built town center.

With a population of 181,647, Newport News is the only city in southeastern Virginia to offer an international airport, train station, and bus station. It also boasts numerous Civil War and naval museums along with water sports and golf clubs. Newport News has a very low cost of living compared to most metropolitan areas; it ranks in the bottom 20% of the 30 largest metropolitan areas.

The coming years will see marked changes for Newport News' economic base. While most employment is still oriented around the shipyards or Ft. Eustis Army Base, future job growth is predicted to be 10% over the next 10 years. Employment growth will come in many industries, including computer technology, healthcare and finance and accounting. Industry change will be driven in part by the many educational institutions in Newport News.
