Many Midlothian residents commute to Richmond to work. The top employers in the Richmond area include:
  • Capital One Financial Corp.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University Health System
  • Hospital Corporation of America
  • Philip Morris U.S.A.
  • Wal-Mart Stores

Midlothian is a place filled with history. The town is the site of some of the first coal mines (operating in 1730) in the United States. Reminders of the town's coal mining past remain in the form of old homes and historic taverns. The Midlothian of today, though, has lost its rough edges. Today, the town's mining heritage is commemorated by the Midlothian Mines Park and the Midlothian Mines and Railroads Foundation.

Midlothian hosts several special local events, including the Midlothian Village Day Festival & Craft Fair and the Midlothian Village Day Parade. The town also offers good shopping, including the Chesterfield Towne Center and the Midlothian Village Square. Nearby Richmond is home to plenty of shopping and cultural activities.
