ARTICLE: HVAC In-Depth
Do you enjoy putting things together and working with your hands? Do you consider yourself mechanically inclined? Then a career as an HVAC or HVAC-R technician could be perfect for you.

HVAC-R?
HVAC-R stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. HVAC technicians help us control the indoor environments of our homes, businesses, industrial plants, schools, and medical and government buildings. Let's face it, we depend upon our heating, ventilation, and air conditioning to keep us comfortable, healthy, and productive all year round. And it's HVAC technicians that install, maintain, and repair refrigeration, heating and air conditioning systems.

What You Learn
When you study to become an HVAC technician, you learn the fundamentals of maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as refrigeration and cooling systems. You'll also study everything from system evacuation and the use of refrigerants to residential heating systems and in some cases, appliances.

Getting Started
While some HVAC technicians learn their skills through onsite experience, most employers prefer hiring HVAC technicians who have completed a formal apprenticeship program or have received formal training at a college or technical school. Most HVAC training programs run 3-4 years, combining hands-on training and classroom instructions.

If you're looking for a career with hot opportunities, it might be time to consider becoming an HVAC technician.

"If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take,
their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."
