ARTICLE: veterinary-science-animal-care In-Depth
Anyone who loves a pet also values the care of an excellent veterinary technician. If you have a passion for animals and a knack for biology and technology, perhaps you should consider a veterinary career. As a veterinary technician, you will most likely work as a small-animal practitioner, helping to treat many household animals such as cats, birds, and dogs. One way to learn if this is the profession for you is to volunteer or work in a vet's office as a veterinary assistant. Assistants learn veterinary procedure, and can observe diagnosis and treatment practices.

Veterinary Technology
Becoming a veterinarian requires formal training from an accredited college of veterinary medicine. During these years of training, you will have hands-on experience learning animal biology, medical procedure, and surgical instruction. You will also learn about veterinary technology and how to operate medical equipment on animals. This includes:
  • Stethoscopes
  • Surgical instruments
  • Radiographic and ultrasound equipment

While no academic program can guarantee future salary, the average earnings for veterinarians were $63,090 in 2002, and some managerial positions pay even more. Becoming a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant is an excellent way to put your love for animals into practice.
