ARTICLE: communications-media In-Depth
Do you devour the morning paper or love watching the nightly news? Do you like the idea of discovering facts and sharing them with others? Then a career in journalism, visual journalism, or communications could be perfect for you.

Course of Study
Communications and journalism majors study everything from interviewing to advertising to media law and ethics. Communications and journalism programs vary. Some schools offer Bachelor's degrees in while others offer Associate degrees and certificate programs.

Journalism and Visual Journalism
As a journalist your primary job is to research, collect information, and communicate it in writing, speech, electronic, or visual media. Journalism majors can become reporters, editors, or newscasters. Visual journalism majors use images as well as words to convey the news. Majoring in visual journalism can lead to jobs from developing news and entertainment-based websites to being a photojournalist for a sports magazine.

Communications
Those with communications degrees focus on the basics of human language and how it's used to communicate ideas and thoughts. Communications majors often go into public relations, speech writing, advertising, and copy writing, as well as broadcasting.

When you major in journalism, communications, or visual journalism, you'll not only learn what it takes to discover and report on the news, but how to effectively share your findings with readers and viewers around the world.
