ARTICLE: catering In-Depth
Catering involves more than just preparing and serving food; it's a business and a culinary art. Catering requires food management skills, customer relations, organizational skills, and good communications skills mixed with--of course--cooking expertise. If you're looking to start a catering business or work in a culinary career, you're going to want hands-on training in a good school and should look for a program that offers:
  • business classes
  • computer training
  • business math courses
  • culinary classes
  • food and beverage management classes
  • nutrition classes

Culinary classes will teach you how to make healthy choices, to ensure safety and sanitation, and to create culinary delicacies. The business classes will teach you to work within the client's budget and how to work with staff and personnel issues.

Culinary degree programs can also give you training in food management with career options like becoming a food and beverage manager. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that food and beverage managers make a median salary of $36,000. While a degree in culinary arts can't guarantee you a job or a specific salary, it can start you on the road to your own catering business or culinary career.
