A career in nursing allows you to utilize scientific knowledge and medical procedure to provide care and assistance to patients. Because there are many different avenues within the nursing profession, it is important to consider where your strengths in this field lie, and then research education requirements.
Fields of Interest
- Nurse practitioner: Often your work will often take place in a physician's office providing primary health care, and sometimes even prescribing medication depending on certification. A nurse practitioner undergoes several years of formal training, and demand for their expertise and care is high.
- Forensic nursing: You provide medical expertise in criminal cases, examining medical evidence and determining injury or cause of death. You can often make up to $300 an hour for your services.
- Geriatric care: You assess, coordinate, and monitor the health and needs of elderly clients. Having keen analytic skills in health assessment is key.
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): You provide basic bedside care, take vital signs and monitor hospital patients. Sometimes, a licensed practical nurse will assist in labor and delivery.
Nursing is an essential feature in medicine, allowing you to provide care, relief, and expertise to patients in need. There are campus-based nursing programs available in all fields of interest and specialty.
