ARTICLE: Medical Coding and Billing In-Depth
Do you have a secret knack for going through volumes of information and keeping organized records? If so, perhaps a career in medical coding and billing is a great fit for you. Medical Billing personnel often work in physician's offices and are responsible for keeping track of a patient's medical care, the various treatments administered, and then creating a medical bill for that individual. Because medical services are broken down into codes, medical transcription is an essential skill in this field.

Skills and Training
While it may seem like medical coding specialists spends all of their time doing paperwork, there is actually a fair amount of communication with the physician that takes place as well. It is important to develop a medical vocabulary and an understanding of medical office practices, but as a medical billing technician you will need to be comfortable with a wide range of tasks:
  • Filling out medical charts
  • Medical transcription
  • Consulting classification manuals
  • Using computer software

Job prospects are excellent for medical billing and coding technicians as more emphasis is being placed on insurance practices. Many campus-based two-year junior colleges or technical schools offer certification.
