ARTICLE: Massage Therapy In-Depth
Massage therapy is a unique profession in which the practitioner applies pressure and special technique to a client's muscle tissue in order to restore health and wellbeing. Massage is often used to help patients recover from injury or provide stress relief, and it is quickly growing as a therapeutic industry.

Types of Massage Therapy
There are several different massage origins and techniques that can help relax and heal tense or aggravated muscle tissue. Here are a few different therapeutic approaches:
  • Swedish: a more western form of massage therapy using gliding strokes, kneading movement, and pressure. Swedish massage increases the flow of oxygenated blood to tight muscle tissues.
  • Deep Tissue: reaches deeper layers of muscle tissue and releases chronic tension. This form of therapy is excellent for skeletal problems and neck and lower back pain.
  • Shiatsu: Japanese massage that means "finger pressure." Shiatsu uses pressure with thumbs, elbows, palms, feet, or forearms and is administered on a flat mat.

Training
Certification for massage therapy varies for each state, but in order to pass the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork's exam, you must complete 500 hours of formal training. Massage provides release and relief to many, making this field extremely gratifying for both the therapist and patient.
