Accounting
After the exposure of several high profile accounting frauds such as Enron, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was written as a code of stringent guidelines that improve accuracy and reliability in corporate bookkeeping. Sarbanes-Oxley introduces a more secure system by preventing accountants from providing nontraditional services to their clients. As a result, there is now an increased need for those who specialize in facets of the industry beyond auditing, making it a great time to become an accountant. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, bachelor's degree candidates in accounting could receive starting salaries of around $40,647. Naturally, no educational program can guarantee future salary, but these numbers speak directly to the promising job prospects for degree-holders.
Education and Certification
In an on campus accounting program, you'll take classes like business statistics, business math, and classes in budgeting and financial record-keeping. With certified public accountant (CPA) positions requiring at least a bachelor's degree, it is important to research job requirements before enrolling in an education program. You will find that some positions require a master's degree in either accounting or business administration. If you are interested in becoming a CPA, you will need to obtain a license by your state's accounting board. This certification allows for tremendous leverage in the accounting industry. Additionally, if you pursue your degree on campus, many programs offer accountant experience through various part-time internships, giving you a better chance of getting your foot in the door.
