ARTICLE: General Studies In-Depth
A classical education doesn't necessarily mean studying the works of Homer and Shakespeare. Sometimes called the Liberal Arts, a classical education is a general studies education, which encompasses an interdisciplinary approach to education. General studies incorporates a little bit of everything, and for students in an art or design program, it can be just about perfect.

Under general studies, students study literature, history, social sciences like sociology and psychology, natural sciences from biology to chemistry, and mathematics.

An art and design degree program will include classes in computer aided design, graphic design, hand and mechanical drawing, and art and design history. From there a student taking art and design general studies classes can focus their studies on a specific area such as:
  • Architecture
  • Photography
  • Environmental design
  • Urban design
  • Textile design
  • Fashion design
  • Interior design

The median salary for interior designers in 2004 was $40,670, for fashion designers $55,840, and for graphic designers $38,030. Artists are harder to track, but according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, fine artists made approximately $38,000 while multi-media artists and animators earned $50,000. Completing an art and design general studies degree program cannot guarantee a job or salary, but it's a leg up in a career you're sure to love.

"If someone is going down the wrong road, he doesn't need motivation to speed him up.
What he needs is education to turn him around."
