ARTICLE: Windsor In-Depth
The southernmost city in Canada, Windsor, Ontario sits just across the river from Detroit at the busiest border crossing in North America. As the westernmost boundary of the heavily populated Quebec City, Windsor is heralded as one of Canada's automotive manufacturing centers. Welcome signs at the entrance to the city announce: "Windsor: The Automotive Capital of Canada."

The largest community in Essex County, the greater Windsor region--which encompasses Tecumseh, Amherstburg, LaSalle, and Lakeshore--has a combined population of approximately 323,000 people. Windsor is the fourth most diverse city in Canada, attracting immigrants from around the world. Famous for its nearly 3,000 acres of municipal parks and green spaces, Windsor is affectionately known as "The City of Roses." It also enjoys a rich cultural heritage: as the oldest Canadian settlement west of Montreal, Windsor continues to celebrate its vibrant French legacy.

Windsor's economy is supported by the automotive and manufacturing tradition that has existed in the Detroit-Windsor region since the birth of the automobile. Numerous small tool and die makers support the larger automobile plants. Some of the largest employers in The City of Roses include:
  • DaimlerChrysler Mini-van Assembly Plant
  • Ford Motor Company Engine Plant
  • General Motors Transmission Plant
  • Hiram Walker Canadian Club Plant

Professionals with expertise in engineering, technology, and manufacturing can find promising job prospects in Canada's southernmost city. Windsor's economic development is heavily reliant upon the automobile industry, a trend which will likely continue in the years to come.
