| ARTICLE: Toronto In-Depth |
A burgeoning city of over 6 million, Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. Located on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto is the financial and industrial center of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, a region in Southern Ontario home to over a quarter of Canada's residents. The city of Toronto encompasses six communities: Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York, and East York.
Generally regarded as the financial capital of Canada, Toronto's economy was recently ranked among the top 10 in the world. It's also an extremely diverse city, with the second highest percentage of foreign-born citizens among all major cities. Toronto's numerous colleges and universities have a major impact on the success of the city, which is an important hub for industries linked to digital media and technology.
Manufacturing, once a major part of Toronto's economy, has declined somewhat in the past few decades, while financial and business services have dominated the economic landscape. Toronto ranks third in North America in the number of large corporations based in the city.
Toronto offers the ambitious professional plenty of opportunities for learning and occupational advancement. Major private employers include:
- Thomson Corporation
- CTVglobemedia
- Roger's Communications
- Alliance Atlantis
- The Toronto Stock Exchange
Those looking for work in the booming city of Toronto can help increase their odds of finding employment with degrees in business administration, telecommunications, or art and design.
