As the largest city in Northern Ontario in population, and the 24th largest metropolitan area in Canada, Sudbury, Ontario stands as an epicenter of of commerce, government, tourism, and science and technology research. Originally named Sainte-Anne-des-Pins, or "St. Anne of the Pines,” Sudbury is now the largest city in Ontario, the seventh largest municipality in Canada. It had a population of 158,258 in the 2006 census.

Sudbury is also known as "Nickel City" because of the nickel and copper mines located in the area known as the Sudbury Basin. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) and Xstrata took control of these mines in 2006 and are planning to pool their resources for the betterment of the Sudbury residential, business, and economic sectors.
