Hamilton is the third-largest metropolitan area in Ontario and the ninth-largest in Canada. While the economic history of Hamilton has focused on steel and heavy manufacturing industries, a technological explosion has drawn more emphasis to the health and sciences sector.

A Canadian Business Magazine survey from 2006 ranked Hamilton the number one location in Ontario for doing business. In 2001, the per capita income of city residents averaged $23,009, a solid 13% above the national average. The largest industry group in Hamilton is the manufacturing sector, with retail sales following closely behind.
