Middleburg Heights started out as marsh and farmland. As the marshes were drained, farmers discovered fertile black soil. Root crops grew particularly well there, earning Middleburg Heights its early nickname, the "Onion Capital of the World." Now the farms are gone, and Middleburg Heights is a full-fledged residential suburb with hotels, restaurants, and shopping.
Middleburg Heights has much to offer nature lovers as well. The Lake Isaac recreation area features a wildlife sanctuary. Migrating birds pass through the lake area, and it is a permanent home for deer, fox, and opossum. Big Creek Parkway has trails, picnic areas, grills, and ball fields. These parks are a part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Park System.
Many residents of Middleburg Heights commute to work. Three interstate highways nearby make travel to and from Middleburg Heights easy.
