ARTICLE: Bohemia In-Depth
Bohemia, New York, is a village within the city of Islip, on Long Island. Its location provides residents with all the amenities of life close to the Big Apple (New York City is 50 miles away) and also the benefits of small-town living.

Bohemia's population was 9,871 at the 2000 U.S. Census, and in general the residents enjoy financially comfortable lifestyles. The median household income in Bohemia was $65,308 in 2000, much higher than the national average. The median house value was $188,100, also high compared to the $119,600 average nationally.

Residents of Bohemia are close to the five state parks within Islip's city limits. Robert Moses State Park offers visitors five miles of ocean beach for swimming, surfing, and fishing. For wildlife enthusiasts, Connetquot River State Park Preserve is the place to see deer, nesting birds, and rare vegetation. 50 miles of trails make this preserve ideal for hiking, horseback riding, or skiing. To get their fix of big-city culture and cuisine, Bohemians can hop on the Long Island Rail Road--the Empire City is only an hour away by train.

Over 20 percent of Bohemians are employed in the educational, health, and social services fields. The city's largest employers are Data Device Corporation, Dayton T. Brown, Inc., and EDO Corporation. The Long Island MacArthur Airport in the town of Islip employs approximately 900 and connects residents to destinations across the US with 92 flights daily.
