ARTICLE: Neptune In-Depth
Neptune Township, New Jersey, occupies eight square miles of land in Monmouth County. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean. New Jersey State Highways 8, 33, 35, 66 and 71 all run through parts of the township, earning it the nickname "The Crossroads of the Jersey Shore." In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau reported a population of 27,960 for Neptune. The city is part of the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island metropolitan area. The per capita income for this area is $43,277 per year, which is 31% higher than the national average.
While many citizens of Neptune commute to work elsewhere in the New York metropolitan area, many others work in their home city. Top employers in Neptune for 2006 include:
- Meridian Health System: 7,600 employees
- Asbury Park Press: 1,300 employees
- CPC Behavioral Healthcare: 435 employees
Each Independence Day, Neptune's residents celebrate with a Fourth of July parade. 19 easily accessible beaches and 16 public golf courses in Monmouth County offer many opportunities for summer fun. Neptune prides itself on being not only a great summer beach town, but also a vibrant year-round community. Midtown Neptune was struggling economically until 1997, when Neptune's citizens formed the Midtown Neptune Empowerment Council. The Council is making great strides in its urban renewal efforts. The Neptune Township Economic Development Corporation is working to lure medical technology firms to the city. The town center went through some difficult times, but now, Neptune's devoted citizens are working hard to put those times behind them.
