Based on income, employment opportunities, and the general quality of life, the MONEY ranking should come as no surprise. O'Fallon's median annual household income is $60,179, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, which also recorded a 30% increase in O'Fallon's population between April 2000 and July 2003 (the rest of Missouri's population grew by just under 2%).
While much of O'Fallon's growth owes to the continued operation of the railroad, the city has also gotten a boost from its thriving business sector. One of the St. Louis area's largest employers, MasterCard International, houses its Global Technology and Operations headquarters in O'Fallon. Each year, the O'Fallon headquarters process more than $1 trillion in credit card transactions from around the world. It's no wonder the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of February 2007, reported a 3.4% increase in professional and business services employment in the St. Louis, Missouri statistical area (which includes O'Fallon).
