ARTICLE: Tewksbury In-Depth
Tewksbury is a town in northeastern Massachusetts' Middlesex County. The 2000 Census reported a population of 28,851 residents. The town shares a western border with Lowell, the fourth-largest city in Massachusetts. Originally settled in 1637, Tewksbury was incorporated as a town in 1734. In the 19th century, residents helped earn Tewksbury its nickname, Carnation Town, by developing a flourishing flower trade. The town became famous for its sprawling districts of greenhouses and fresh flower markets.

Tewksbury is 21 miles north of Boston, and many residents commute to the metropolitan area for work and play. Andover, Massachusetts borders on the northeast. At $302,507, average property values for a single-family home are typically higher here than the state average of $217,160. The reported median income in Tewksbury is a dazzling $68,800, well above the national average of $46,242.

While personal income is high, the town of Tewksbury has its share of infrastructure woes. It has tried unsuccessfully for 20 years to gain state approval for a highway interchange to serve Lowell Junction business park, home to AGFA Films, Wyeth BioPharma, Gillette/Proctor & Gamble, and Charles River Labs--businesses that employ 6,000 residents.

Current Tewksbury business initiatives are being developed in support of pharmaceutical research and development companies. Acusphere recently opened an office in town. Tewksbury is corporate home to Avid, the digital editing equipment giant. Its other top employers include:
  • Tewksbury Hospital
  • Acusphere
  • Avid Technologies
  • Demoulas Super Markets Inc.
