ARTICLE: Sanford In-Depth
Located in York County (population 187,000), Sanford, ME is a bustling town with over 20,000 residents, including the village of Springvale. Like many towns in the state of Maine, Sanford has resisted modernization and widespread business development. In 2003, for example, city residents defeated a proposal to erect a $650 million casino and convention center complex. This casino would have helped created almost 5,000 permanent jobs, but residents disliked the traffic potential, not to mention the general erosion of small-town life.

Economic hardships are nothing new to Sanford. When the textile industry folded during the 1950s, many residents lost their jobs and the city faced financial ruin. However, tenacity and perseverance are staples of Sanford. Life Magazine cited Sanford as "the city that refused to die."

Per capita income in Sanford, ME is approximately $17,000 a year, with household income approaching $35,000. Over 75% of its adults over the age of 25 have a high school diploma and roughly 11% have a bachelor's degree or higher.

Although city residents may have felt strongly about building a casino, they still would like to draw more business to the area, so long as these companies do not hinder community cohesion and spirit. Tax incentives, landscaping, fairs, and festivals are just a few of the initiatives that city leaders have enacted to attract investments to the area.
