Wichita is known as the Air Capitol because it is home to some major aircraft manufacturing plants and McConnell Air Force Base. The Wichita Metropolitan Area, including Wichita (population 350,0000) and the next largest town of Newton (population 20,000), has an overall population of approximately 580,000. Visitors to Wichita should check out the large "Keeper of the Plains" statue on the Arkansas River, as well as the historic Cowtown Museum and the city's beautiful botanic gardens.

In 2004, this area of Kansas posted an average personal income of $31,781. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, the average Wichita resident earns 4% less than the average American. The average income has grown by 7.1% over the past 35 years, which is about 5% lower than the national average.

The largest employers in Wichita are all aircraft manufacturers:

Boeing used to be the area's largest employer, but they sold their parts manufacturing division to Spirit a few years ago.
