ARTICLE: Quincy In-Depth
Quincy, IL is located in Adams County, along the Mississippi river. Despite strong business development, it's currently experiencing negative population growth, possibly due to the low median household income of $30,956. Popularly known as the "Gem City," Quincy had a population of 40,366 in 2000, which was projected to come down to 39,841 by July 2005. Ursa, La Grange, and Payson are the nearest cities to Quincy, IL, while Chicago is 287 miles away.

The per capita income of Quincy is $17,479, which is lower than the national average. Healthcare and education are the two largest employment sectors in the area. Quincy is home to Blessing Hospital, considered to be the best hospital in the Tri-State Area of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. Blessing Hospital is also the top employer in Quincy, followed by the Quincy public school system. Titan Wheel International (manufacturer of wheels and rims) is another major employer.

Under the Quincy Economic Development Loan Program, the city has authorized $26,836,000 for 85 projects covered by 59 different companies. As a direct result of this bold initiative, over 2,622 jobs have been created since 1984. However, new companies have not moved into the Quincy region over the past decade. Blessing Hospital was founded in 1875 and the Quincy public school system was established in 1847. 23 loans totaling $2,808,528 have been approved for business development under the Central Business District Revolving Loan Fund, so hopefully more corporations will explore what Quincy has to offer in the way of business opportunities.
