ARTICLE: Naperville In-Depth
Naperville, IL, located in DuPage County, is the fourth largest city in Illinois, following Chicago and neighbors Aurora and Rockford. Naperville was one of the fastest-growing economies in the U.S. in the 1990s, and it now has a robust economy with a poverty rate lower than 2.2%, despite having a population of more than 100,000 residents. The US Census Bureau projected in 2000 that the population of Naperville would reach 140,106 by the next census, which represents phenomenal growth for the city that was founded in 1831 by Joseph Naper.

Situated in the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, Naperville is home to many major corporations, including Lucent Technologies, BP, Nalco Chemical, Nicor, and Edward Hospital. People seeking jobs in the management, technical, and scientific fields stand a good chance of finding employment here. Retail, healthcare, education, and local government also provide numerous career opportunities for Naperville residents. While Lucent Technology is the top overall employer, Edward Hospital leads the list of healthcare employers.

Both the median household income ($88,771) and per capita income ($35,551) figures are very healthy in Naperville. It also boasts a well-educated population, 96% of whom have a high school degree and 60% with bachelor's degree.

For now, all roads around Naperville are packed with commuters going to and from nearby Chicago. The city administrators have formulated the Naperville Development Partnership with the support of several entities-- the government, the Chamber of Commerce, school districts, and others--to expand the vitality of Naperville's economy.
