The median household income is $52,605 and the per capita income is $21,112, slightly lower than the national per capita income of $21,587.
Sherman Hospital is the top employer in this city, followed by Bank One Card Services, a credit card-issuing company. Provena St. Joseph is also a major employer. There is a riverboat casino named Grand Victoria that employs a large number of people as well.
The government of Elgin, IL, has created many development initiatives and grants to attract businesses and propel the economy. One such measure includes the e-Elgin incentive program, which pays for half of technology infrastructure improvements for downtown-based business. There is also a provision for property tax abatement and a sales tax waiver. It remains to be seen how effectively these things will work to give Elgin a better economy.
