Crystal Lake, Illinois, is situated 50 miles northwest of Chicago. Its location near several major highways and Chicago's world-famous International O'Hare Airport provides local residents of Crystal Lake with many job opportunities. That being said, Crystal Lake has still managed to maintain its suburban charm without becoming engulfed by the Windy City.

Situated in McHenry County, Crystal Lake, IL, had a population of 38,000 according to the 2000 census. Lakewood, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, and Trout Valley are some of the nearest cities to Crystal Lake, although Chicago is the center of the massive metro area. Crystal Lake's reputation for charity is unparalleled: its residents created the tradition of giving gold coins anonymously to the Salvation Army.

More than 90% of its population has high school diplomas. The median household income in Crystal Lake is $66,873 and the per capita income is $26,146. The main industries in the city are retailing, dining, and electrical products, but none of these are large-scale. The local industrial park is full of small and medium-sized firms that engage in landscaping and automotive repair. There are a large number of automobile dealers in Crystal Lake. Precision Twist Drill is the top employer in the city, followed by Sun Electric Co., a manufacturer of electric testing equipments.

The city of Crystal Lake has enacted several measures to bring greater prosperity to the region, including beautification initiatives and various tax breaks.
