Average income has grown 6.7% over the last 35 years, slightly less than the national average.
Chicago has the second largest central business district in the United States, and the area's largest employers include corporate and entertainment superstars:
- Abbott Laboratories, located in Kenosha, Wisconsin
- Comcast, All State, and Boeing
- The Oprah Winfrey Show
- The Chicago White Sox, winners of the 2005 World Series
Though Gary, Indiana, which was founded by the U.S. Steel Corporation, has seen a decline in employment as the steel industry has weakened, other major industrial sectors in the Chicago-Gary-Kenosha area are going strong, including:
- Information technology
- Manufacturing
- Printing and publishing
- Food production
