Originally known as West Hammond, Calumet City, IL, is also popularly known as "Cal City." Calumet City is on the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet rivers, situated in Cook County, and according to the 2000 census, the city's current population is approximately 40,000. Burnham, Lansing, Hammond, and Dolton are some of the nearest cities to Calumet City, although Calumet City's importance as an economic center is largely responsible for the inbound commuters who help drive up the population during working hours.

Nearly 80% of people in Calumet City have high school diplomas. The median household income is $38,902. The per capita income in Calumet City, IL, is $18,123, compared with $21,587 nationally. The majority of the people of Calumet City, IL, are employed in retail trade, accommodation & food services, local government, and healthcare. Marshall Fields and J C Penney & Co. (both major retailers) are the two top employers in the city.

That being said, Calumet City has encountered various economic setbacks in recent years due to outsourcing, decreased spending, and waning of natural resources. However, the business community of Calumet City, IL, has worked tirelessly to bring more prosperity to the region in recent years. In addition to generous funding in the shopping districts, the city has also enacted ambitious investment and incentive programs, including tax increment financing, enterprise zones, and Cook County tax incentives. Because of these measures, many sectors of Calumet City have experienced growth in the past five years, and the next census should bear this out.
