ARTICLE: Honolulu In-Depth
It's tough to find a better place that combines location and income than Honolulu, Hawaii. The 2000 United States Census ranked Honolulu eighth out of 280 metropolitan statistical areas based on median household income. Often mocked as "Los Angeles West" by residents of Hawaii's smaller locales, Honolulu's chosen nickname is "The Queen of the Pacific." Honolulu is among the ten largest American cities, and serves as the Hawaiian state capital. The city has close to one-million permanent residents.

The Honolulu hotel and convention business continues to thrive. Tourism remains the largest revenue source of this Hawaiian city, hosting an estimated 100,000 visitors per day. But the Queen of the Pacific has diversified and become the commercial and financial services center of Hawaii. Federal government and military installations encourage support, service, and subcontracting businesses.

Top Honolulu employers include:
  • Marriot International
  • Hawaiian Airlines Inc.
  • BancWest Corporation
  • ALTRES Global Business Services Inc.
  • The University of Hawaii
  • Aloha Airgroup
  • Hawaii Pacific Health
  • Kaiser Permanante
  • Verizon Hawaii

Honolulu enjoys a per capita income of $34,911 -- which puts it at 106% of the national average. The growth rate is at a less spectacular 7.1%, some 5% below the national growth average.
