ARTICLE: Stockbridge In-Depth
As the largest city in Henry County (population 167,000), Stockbridge, Georgia is home to over 20,000 residents. However, due to its close proximity to Atlanta, nearly 25% of Stockbridge residents commute to Georgia's capital city on a daily basis. Those who work in Atlanta gravitate towards any number of jobs and industries, but the largest employers within Stockbridge city limits are:
  • Georgia Power Company's Customer Care Center
  • SunTrust Bank operations center
  • Henry Medical Center

Per capita income in Stockbridge, GA is roughly $22,000 a year, and household income approaches $49,000 a year. Roughly 25% of all adults over the age of 25 possess a bachelor's degree or higher, and over 80% hold at least a high school diploma.

Stockbridge, GA was recently the scene of an eminent domain dispute between the officials and local residents. As part of a revitalization effort to beautify the city and attract new business, the local government wanted to erect a new park, city hall, and business district by taking over residential lands. The debate is still going on, and a ruling is expected soon.

If the eminent domain dispute goes in favor of city officials, Stockbridge will probably attract many more businesses from the Atlanta area, not to mention foreign investors from abroad. If local residents emerge victorious, Stockbridge will maintain its small-town charm, but might have difficulty navigating the urban sprawl that seems be creeping from Atlanta outward.
