| ARTICLE: Pompano Beach In-Depth |
Standing in the shadows of Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Florida is a city whose population swelled from 88,000 residents to 100,000 after the annexation of neighboring Pompano Beach Highlands and Collier-Manor-Cresthaven. Known as a popular tourist haven, Pompano Beach is one of the top vacation real estate markets in the country. Various beachside shops, restaurants, and tourists outlets account for a substantial portion of the local economy, although Pompano Beach is a self-sustaining city in its own right, thanks to major employers like Imperial industries, Inc., and PetMed Express, Inc.
In 2000, the median per capita income was approximately $23,000, and the median household income was $36,000. Pompano Beach is a relatively diverse city; its residents are 61% white, 25% black, 10% Hispanic, and 5% other. It is hoped that the recent annexation will help boost the local economy and bring in more businesses in tourist dollars as Pompano Beach becomes an even more popular destination for investors and vacationers alike.
The city has a rich history, dating back to the Tequesta Native Americans. Numerous historical landmarks are located throughout the region, and it's likely that city developers will have to lay out future plans around these sacred sites (one of which is a prehistoric Native American burial ground). But with almost 58 square miles of land, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to preserve the city's history while investing heavily in new structures, parks, and shopping centers. Pompano Beach, FL is a city ripe for change and expansion.
