ARTICLE: Plantation In-Depth
Plantation, Florida, so named because the early city founders purchased large tracts of land shortly before incorporation, is a bustling small city of approximately 86,000 residents. Situated within driving distance of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Plantation boasts all the trimmings of upscale suburbia, including Olympic-size swimming pools, countless golf courses, and numerous recreational parks. The city is highly intellectual, with over 90% of all adults over the age of 25 holding a high school diploma, and nearly 37% of all residents over the age of 25 holding a bachelor's degree or higher. The median per capita income is $28,000 a year, and median household income is almost $54,000 a year.

Healthcare and biomedical services are the two largest sectors in Plantation, FL, although tourism and retail account for sizable portions of the economy. The city was hit hard by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but local residents have worked tirelessly to restore Plantation's original luster. After all, the city's motto is "The Grass Is Greener."

Given the high percentage of college degrees, Plantation is predominantly a white-collar residential area that provides numerous career opportunities for those with training in marketable professional skills. Despite its relatively small size, the city is still active enough to host a good public transportation system. Local residents frequently use the tram to make their way around this city of 22 square miles. As spillover from Fort Lauderdale and surrounding cities continues to enlarge Plantation's population, local businesses will have to invest even more funds into both cities' transportation infrastructures and health services economies.
