ARTICLE: Orlando In-Depth
Although its thriving economy suggests the presence of millions of people, Orlando is only Florida's 5th largest city, with a population of around 200,000. Jacksonville is the state's largest city (773,781), followed by Miami (376,815), Tampa (317,647), and St. Petersburg (247,610). The Orlando metropolitan area does encompass nearly 2 million people, although this pales in comparison to the nearly 45 million tourists who flock to the area every year.

Its subtropical climate has lent pleasant meaning to the city's nickname, "The City Beautiful," though it may not last. A new contest to change this nickname may result in a new one soon.

The tourism industry alone generates approximately $25 billion in revenue for the Orlando area. Long established as a major center of entertainment and Tourism, Orlando is home to:
  • Walt Disney World
  • Epcot Center
  • Numerous film studio theme parks

In recent years, the area's economy has expanded rapidly, due to:
  • Biotech, aerospace, film and TV production, manufacturing, and distribution.
  • Aerospace has had a longstanding presence in Orlando, dating all the way back to WWII air and military bases.
  • Lockheed Martin and Signature Air Services (two of the biggest aerospace companies in the world) is a major Orlando employer.
  • The markets of entertainment and high tech are also growing--from a $2.5 million entertainment market in the City Beautiful to a near $600 million market today.
  • Mitsubishi and Westinghouse are major high tech firms that also employ thousands in Orlando and advance wireless and medical technologies every year.
