ARTICLE: Orange Park In-Depth
Founded in the 1870s as a farming retreat for winter travelers, Orange Park, Florida has blossomed considerably over the years. Its population hovers around 9,000 residents, but when one factors in the population of the greater Clay County Metropolitan area (which includes Bellair-Meadowbrook Terrace, Fleming Island, Doctor's Inlet, and Orange Park South), the figure is closer to 140,000.

The city's name is an apt one, since orange production is still a robust industry in this region of the Floridian Peninsula, although other industries have managed to flourish in recent years. Medical research and healthcare services, for example, are responsible for a sizable portion of employment, with Orange Park Medical Center, Inc. leading the way. Currently, educational, health, and social services account for nearly 20% of total employment.

Per capita income in Orange Park, FL is approximately $25,000 a year, but a large portion of city residents commute to nearby Jacksonville, FL, which is less than 30 minutes away. Major employers like Blue Cross Blue Shield and Vistakon (maker of Acuvue contact lenses) account for many of the jobs held by Orange Park, FL residents.

Despite the rapid influx of healthcare investments and manufacturing jobs, Orange Park, FL has worked diligently to maintain its small-town feel. In 1995, the city erected a new town hall as a tribute to the many citizens who call Orange Park County their home.
