ARTICLE: Largo In-Depth
Largo, Florida, lies within Pinellas County and is a part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area. It has an approximate population of 71,704 people, which has grown 3.22% since the 2000 census.

The per capita income of Largo residents is $20,838, which is below the national average. However, within the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area, the average personal per capita income is far higher at $31,677. This number has been growing at a rate of 9.2% annually, which is 23% higher than the national average growth rate. In addition, the cost of living within Largo is 1% lower than the national average, and the unemployment rate is 2% lower, so this addresses some of the imbalance.

Agriculture was the major employer in Largo until the 1960s, but since then has been on the decline. Current major employers in Largo now consist of:
Hospitals (including the Largo Medical Center Hospital and the Sun Coast Hospital)
  • Electronics
  • Light manufacturing

The medical industry should continue to grow with the aging population in Florida creating a greater demand for healthcare. Clearwater, only five miles away, also offers job opportunities.

The city has increased spending on development over the last 10 years, drawing new residents. New community developments in Largo include:
  • Largo Central Park
  • Largo Cultural Center
  • The newly built Largo Public Library
