ARTICLE: Fort Myers In-Depth
Fort Myers and Cape Coral are both in Lee County. Unincorporated North Ft. Myers, which falls within the Lee County government, has the largest population, at 292,414 as of 2005. Cape Coral is the next largest area with approximately 140,000 people, and the city of Fort Myers ranks third with 61,412. The Edison-Ford Museum is definitely the area's most famous attraction.

In 2004, this area of Florida posted an average personal income of $33,073. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, the average Fort Myers/Cape Coral resident earns just about the same as the average American. However, average income has grown 11.7% over the past 35 years, an impressive 56% growth over the national average.

The largest employers in Lee County are:
  • The Lee County School District
  • The county health system
  • Grocery chain Publix ranks third
  • The Lee County government
  • Walmart
Given that Publix and Walmart fall into the top five employers, it is reasonable to conclude that the area's services sector offers employment possibilities.

Over the last ten years, this region has seen unprecedented real-estate development. Given that it's close to the ocean but offers lower-priced real estate compared to other ocean-front cities in Florida, young and old people are flocking to the the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area to take advantage of affordable housing.
