ARTICLE: Sylmar In-Depth
Sylmar is located in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles, CA. Its name is derived from a combination of the Latin word for "forest" and Spanish word for "sea." Sylmar's economy originated with the Los Angeles Olive Growers Association, which built an olive-packing plant and sold the fruits under the brand name "Sylmar Packing." After a major earthquake damaged the city in 1971, Sylmar's social and economic recovery was dramatic. The Olive View Medical Center was restored and opened in 1987.

The city of Sylmar, CA counts Stetson Ranch, Equestrian Park, and the Angeles National Forest among its abundant recreational facilities. The economic jewel of the area is the static inverter plant of the HVDC power line Pacific Intertie.

The economic composition of Sylmar mixes manufacturing and service-related industries. The following industries are major contributors to the region:
  • Manufacturing
  • Commerce and retail
  • Healthcare

The city boasts a complex transportation system that conveniently moves its residents in and out of the surrounding communities. Sylmar is accessible from the Golden State Freeway, the Foothill Freeway, and the southern terminus of the Antelope Valley Freeway. Other major thoroughfares include Foothill Boulevard, San Fernando Road, and Bradley Avenue. Easy access to the larger Los Angeles basin has contributed to economic growth in the area.
