ARTICLE: Sacramento In-Depth
Sacramento, the capital city of sunny California, is located nearly in the middle of the state. The Sacramento River, which winds through the city, helped to make Sacramento the western end of the Pony Express, and the hub of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
Two hours from the Bay Area, Sac-town as it is popularly called, has a number of nicknames. "Capital City" and "River City" are to be expected, but "Sacratomato" and "Sack O' Tomatoes" play on Sacramento's agricultural background.
Although tomato fields have been replaced with tract homes, lessening agricultural demand, Sacramento, CA is still growing at an astounding rate. Transplants from the Bay Area seeking lower housing prices, plus an influx of immigrants, have swelled the population by 14.7% between 1990 and 2000. The average per capita income in the Sacramento area is $33,338, thanks in part to a city council motion passed in 2003 that demanded employers pay their workers a living wage.
With a broad array of residents ranging across racial, ethnic and financial lines, Sacramento is unique in that it was named by Time magazine and Harvard University's Civil Rights Project as the most racially and ethnically integrated city in America.
Food processing and shipping are the two largest industries in this metropolitan area, thanks to the central location of this city. As the capitol of California, the State of California is a top employer. Other large companies with locations in Sacramento are:
- Intel
- Hewlett Packard
- Sutter Health
- Verizon Wireless
